"There's really no story with Mary. She's just a friend from my past. I'm actually surprised it took her this long to find me." I said as I took another drink from my coke.

"Why's that?" Martin asked, stretching lazily.

"Maybe it is something of a story and I just don't realize it because I lived it. But I met Mary while I was living in Redstone and playing bass for 'Powerfly'. She was our lead singer, Tessa's roommate. She came to all our shows, helped us set up and tear down, and ran our merchandising table. After a few weeks we started dating, or at least indiscriminately fucking. It was all right, neither of us minded the whole set up. That is, until I caught her in bed with Amy, our keyboard player. Suffice to say at that point we broke off what we had, we remained friends, but it was a little strained. Eventually I left the band and started working on some of my own stuff and things between us got better. Then I left Redstone and came back here, but everytime I move to a new town she has this habit of finding me. It's kind of cool in that stalkerish way." I crushed my coke can and stood up.

"I don't think stalkerish quite covers something like that. Perhaps she's doing it because she still has some feelings for you and this is her way, insane as it may seem, of expressing them." Martin got up and went to the window.

"You could be right, but I don't think I can trust her like that anymore. It's one of those complicated things." I couldn't help but think to myself, what if he is right? I'm not sure if I want to bring back what Mary and I had, especially now that I've found Nikki, even though that is still in the early stages.

"You can head off and do what you want, I just need to get the canvas out of the garage to cover the dressers, then I'm going to visit Natalie at the bar." He waked out of the room and headed down the stairs.

I walked back down the hall to my room, I turned on my stereo just to create some kind of noise in the room. One of my mix CDs started blaring random rock songs. I fell onto the floor next to my bed and lay there staring up towards the ceiling. I heard Martin tromping up the stairs and into the other bedroom with the canvas in his arms, then head back down, all the while singing along with my CD.

I rolled over and grabbed one of my sketchbooks out of my backpack and started trying to finish the picture I had started while I was talking to Nikki in the park. After a few minutes of working at it I leaned back and looked at it, I realized it was a picture of Nikki and Mary.

It's odd because I wasn't even thinking about Mary until Martin told me she called. The picture was of the two of them, back to back with some space in-between, standing as if they were defending something. I couldn't think of anything that would fit in there at the moment.

"Hey Seven, I'm heading up to Platinum, you want me to bring anything back for you?" Martin called up the stairs.

"No, I'm good. Tell Natalie I want to talk to her when she gets home though." I yelled back to him.

I rolled back over and picked up the book I was reading. I fell asleep there on the floor at some point because the next thing I remember is Natalie nudging my ribs with her foot.

"Wake up, Martin said you wanted to talk to me when I got home. So here I am, lets talk." She sat in my desk chair after I lazily rolled over and acknowledged her presence.

I sat up against my bed and ran my fingers through my hair. Shook my head to loosen the metaphorical cobwebs and looked up at her. She hadn't even changed from work yet, I guess she came right up here to talk to me. I looked into her eyes and said, "Mary is coming to town tomorrow to visit me."
