"The part of this that confuses me is that Nikki is still wearing her ring. The black part of it was only and band of something that she had put over it. Now it's an entire ring in and of itself." I knocked ring against the edge of the coffee table.

"Transmutation is a new trick for you then?" Parker smirked.

"Magic is a new trick for me."

"It's not for me. It was one of the first things I started doing well." Nikki smiled proudly.

"Yes, it has your aura around it. This was something that you did."

"Wait a minute, not that I want to change the subject, but I'm changing the subject. How come everyone but me seems to know that magic exists in the world and how to use or recognize it?"

"I seriously doubt you would believe me if I told you."

"Well, you're like this super-witch or whatever so it's been part of your life forever. The Priest is magical in and of himself I guess. But what about you Parker? Where or how did you learn about magic?" "I hate to sound cliche, but you wouldn't believe me if I told you either."

"Why is everyone saying that? Why doesn't anyone think that I can handle the deep, dark truth of the situation? I understand that I've reacted poorly to some things in my past, but I'd like to think I've grown and I know I can handle things much better now."

"Fine, I'll tell you where I learned about magic." Parker reached over and put his hand on my shoulder. "Seven, I learned what I know about magic from your parents. I knew your mother from when she lived in Palmero. Her mother, your grandmother, and my mother were friends and your mother was my babysitter as a child. As I grew up she would show me different tricks, things that I thought were only sleight of hand and tabletop illusions that were really magic. She taught me to recognize the feel of something that had been affected by magic, how to see through illusions, how to open up my other senses. What she taught me as a child helped me throughout my life and with my martial arts training. I met your father one Christmas when your mother brought him to meet her family. She had told him what she taught me and he taught me a few more things. I really don't know much, but what I do know I learned from them."

"So how come you weren't part of Seven's life? Or how come you didn't go one with any magical training?" Nikki asked.

"Why would I have been part of Seven's life? I was nine years younger than his mother and eleven years older than him. I was just someone from his mother's past. As for the magical training, I never really had an aptitude for it. All I ever really learned was basic stuff that almost anyone can do. And as for why you never learned anything about magic, I just don't know."

"I can answer that question."
