2006-02-13 - 5:10 p.m. "Can we continue without The Priest or is he integral to all of this?" Nikki asked me. "That depends on your answers to my questions." I said smugly. "Ask away my dear boy," Doc said with a grin. "Just don't be upset if you don't like the answers." "Why is The Council and magic or whatever all of this is; why is it hidden from the rest of the world?" I asked Nikki more than Doc. Nikki sighed heavily then spoke, "Magic is hidden from the normal portion of the populace because they can't truly grasp what is going on in front of them when it is used. The normal human mind can't quite comprehend the reordering of the universe and its forces in front of it without suffering some kind of psychotic break." "There is more to it than that but, that sums it up rather well. There is more than just magic being hidden from humanity though. The technology that anchors me to a certain point in time was just created by magic or technological advances alone. The suspension of the disbelief that either one could work with the other, the marriage of the two is responsible for more technological achievements than anything else." Doc opened a panel on the side of his wrist computer. "This little machine is run by an operating system that was created by simply forcing the magic into a belief that it existed. If someone were to try and look at its source and pull it apart or change it, it would simply cease to exist; because at that point they wouldn't believe that it existed at all." "You two keep talking like magic users are different from everyone else, like they're some kind of mutation along the evolutionary ladder or something. But Parker here," I grabbed Parker's shoulder, "He can use a little magic and he can recognize when it's been used, and he seems normal." "We all seem normal Seven, but we're not. We have an ability that separates us from the rest of the world and that makes us different. For some reason we're able to cope with the effects of magic on the world around us without any problems. It could be something to do with our genetic makeup, it could be some kind of connection to the ever-after out there, or it could just be something that no one will ever understand. I seriously doubt anyone in this room can answer that question right now." Nikki spoke slowly and with such conviction that I couldn't help but believe her. "Why didn't my parents tell me or Natalie about any of this?" I sunk into the couch and stared at Nikki and Doc. "It is entirely possible that they didn't tell you or your sister because they thought you wouldn't be able to handle it." spoke in that even voice of his. It made you wonder what he was up to. "They didn't tell you because they loved you. They hid your abilities from you and everyone around you because they didn't want you to live the life they were forced to. When The Council found out about their abilities they were taken away from their families and tested and broken down until they understood about their abilities. They didn't want you or Natalie to go through that." Nikki moved next to me and put her arm around my shoulders. "How did they know that we would be taken away to be tested and all that if The Council found out if we had magical abilities or whatever you want to call it?" I turned under her arm to look at her. She didn't speak, she just looked into my eyes and I could see the tears welling up. I reached my arms around her and pulled her into me and she started crying. I looked at Doc and Parker for an answer. "They knew it would happen to you the same was Nikki knows it will happen to you. Because it happens to all Council children."
